Sam West began Kyudo in Boulder in 1980 with Sendai, Shibata Kanjuro Sensei XX. Sendai was invited to teach Kyudo in Colorado by Tibetan Meditation Master Chogyam Trungppa Rinpoche.

Mr. West was employed in the Grand Canyon at that time where he worked as a River Ranger on the Colorado River. He practiced Kyudo there and often drove to Boulder to visit Sendai and attend special Kyudo programs that were held with Sendai.

In 1983 Sam moved to Litchfield Connecticut to work with Paul Winter as a music producer and director of Living Music Foundation, then moved to New York where he became responsible (Somo) for Toko Kyudojo in Manhattan.

Mr. West traveled to Kyudo programs with Sendai during the 1980s, the moved to Nova Scotia in 1987
where he became responsible for Kozan Kyudojo. Sendai sent Sam to help develop Kyudo and dojos in Europe and the US.

Mr. West attended many Kyudo programs in North America and Europe where he helped Sendai teach the traditional Heki Ryu Bishu Chickurin-Ha school of Kyudo.

In 1999, Sendai requested Sam to move to Boulder to organize and develop all the Kyudojos within Zenko International. For a number of years, Sam lived with Sendai, cared for him, studied Kyudo, organized and traveled with Sendai to programs in North America and Europe.

In 2004, Sam moved to California to help develop Kyudojos in Los Angeles, Ojai and Pullahari Retreat Center. Sam continued to work with Sendai assisting with Kyudo programs.

Since 2007, Mr. West has lived in Nova Scotia from where he traveled to assist Sendai in teaching Kyudo in North America and Europe until Sendai’s passing. Sam continues to lead and assist Kyudo programs at home and abroad under the current lineage holder, Shibata Kanjuro Sensei XXI.
